Manufacturers selling cars in Europe will be required by the European Commission proposals to reduce their vehicles' average CO2 emissions to 130 g/km by 2012, rather than the 120 g/km proposed by Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas, according to the Financial Times yesterday. An additional 10g/km cut per vehicle is reportedly to be targeted through greater use of biofuels and other innovations, rather than being made wholly the responsibility of car manufacturers. If proved accurate when the EC proposals are made public tomorrow, the FT's report smacks of an at least partial victory for the German Industry Commissioner Günter Verheugen and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who had reportedly both sought to minimise the effect of legislated carbon emissions cuts on the German automotive sector....

Rover belongs on a leash

Whats with dog owners who take their dogs to parks requiring leashes yet fail to leash their dogs. Its as if they think the leash rules dont apply to dogs riding in Land Rovers, but only to the Dodge dogs. The problem happened this week on an early morning run. My friends dog was leashed and running along smoothly, until we ran into an unleashed black lab on the verge of jumping from his sitting position next to his shiny black Land Rover. Sorry folks, leash laws apply no matter how fancy the dog or car they're riding in. Help prevent pet-related injuries and follow leash laws in public parks. posted by Jeanine Stice ....

In a new white paper entitled Jaguar's part in rescuing Ford, UK automotive research firm Trend Tracker's analyst Michael Wynn-Williams suggests that Ford should consider selling its Ford Credit finance arm, or even Volvo, before potentially selling its premium brands, Jaguar and Land Rover. Ford is currently rumoured to be trying to sell off its English holdings in an effort to staunch overall corporate losses. A new research paper by Trend Tracker Analyst, Michael Wynn-Williams, argues that using Land Rover to enhance a potential deal would do nothing to make Jaguar itself more attractive and would deprive Ford of two premium brands and not one. Caught in a market squeeze between the premium brands and the fast proliferating value brands, Wynn-Williams suggests Ford's future lies with its own globally recognized premium brand....
