Grisly end for Fratello in Memphis
Posted Tuesday, January 02, 2007 2:46:05 PM by Blog57 Team
Its an article of faith in the NBA coaching fraternity that its never a good idea to have the head man in the final year of his contract. The term lame duck becomes part of the daily discourse, and the players know there is going to be a change or else ownership would have extended the guy. Last seasons designated lame duck was Rick Adelman. Next years might be Doc Rivers. This seasons was Mike Fratello. When the Memphis Grizzlies did not extend Fratello, the writing was on the proverbial wall. Now, if youre a coach and you know youre not coming back, then you go down your way, which is what Fratello did before getting fired Thursday. He had been advised to play an up-tempo style and go with young players. He preferred veterans and a slower pace, which could explain why Memphis was 22 nd in scoring, last in rebounding, and 26 th in fieldgoal percentage....

Nigeria: Thinking the Unthinkable

I feel obliged to bring the subject of these reflections forward at least, to launch a public consideration of a matter for unique but urgent concern. The substance of this specific intervention was in fact designated for a lecture commitment in March next year However, this outgoing year has been an open season of surprises, where the once unthinkable materializes almost routinely. The probable consolidation of such anomalies compels me to bring the subject forward, call attention to a cause for unease which, in numerous discussions, appear to dominate the thinking of others. A month, we know, is not a remarkably long period in the frenzied tempo of the political life of most nations on the continent, and I am not inclined towards - to deploy one of our favourite expressions of local wisdom - medicine after death....

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP)_ Tulsa methodically moved through Memphis both on the ground and through the air, capturing its fifth straight win. Courtney Tennial rushed for three touchdowns and quarterback Paul Smith threw for 217 yards and another touchdown Saturday to help the Golden Hurricane beat Memphis 35-14. ``These guys are playing with a ton of confidence,'' Memphis coach Tommy West said of Tulsa. ``Their quarterback is playing really well for them. They're big. They're seniors up front. They're huge, and they'll maul you.'' Smith completed 17-of-20 passes in the game, including all three in the second half, as Tulsa (6-1, 3-0 Conference USA), led from the start. Tennial's scoring runs came from 1, 2 and 3 yards, while rushing for 98 yards on 21 carries....

How I learned to second line

When it's really going on, people are dancing out of their heads, maybe even out of their bodies. The bass drum rumbles like thunder on the mountain; snare drums snap your hips into twitching spasms; the horns, twisting around each other like a nest of serpents, call out to the heavens, calling all you children back home. Dancers throw their hands into the air as if trying to grab the music and hold it above their heads for the world to see. ....

Central Division Notes

Why will the Pistons win the Eastern Conference this season? High-quality depth. Regardless of whether Larry Brown starts Elden Campbell or Mehmet Okur in the pivot, Detroit will be able to bring three seven-footers (Okur/Campbell, Darko Milicic, and Zeljko Rebraca) off the bench. Joining the tall guys are veteran role players like Bob Sura, Chucky Atkins, Lindsey Hunter, and Darvin Ham, a dirty work-guy who the new head coach likens to George Lynch, who helped guide the Brown-led 76ers to the 2001 NBA Finals. The Pistons' second unit is so strong that ESPN's Chad Ford wonders, "With Brown using more players inside, will (Corliss) Williamson become the odd man out?" This is the same player who has garnered sixth-man of the year consideration the past two seasons, while scoring nearly 13 points per game....

THIRD MURDER TRIAL: The suspect's former girlfriend says she has to get the truth off her chest. 10:00 PM PDT on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 By PAUL DeCARLO The Press-Enterprise RIVERSIDE - Erin Dee Decker walked down from the witness stand on the advice of her attorney to show the jury her small, outstretched hands. Decker told the court Tuesday she was a changed woman, admitting she lied repeatedly to police and family members after her mother was killed more than five years ago in their Banning home. "It's a big burden to carry," said Decker, now a mother with a young daughter. "And the truth needs to be told." Paula Decker was discovered suffocated by police in March 2001, a throw pillow covering her face as her body lay on the living room carpet near her front door....
