Ford presents buyout offers

Six-figure buyout programs were offered Tuesday to the 1,730 hourly workers at St. Paul's Ford Ranger plant to persuade them to leave by Jan. 1, or more than a year before the plant is scheduled to close in 2008. Ford Motor Co. and union officials conducted four meetings to discuss the details of eight separate plans with employees throughout the day and into the evening Tuesday. Eligible workers can choose just one package. "We didn't get what we wanted, but we got what we expected," said Roger Turveen, president of the United Auto Workers Local 879. The plans offered to St. Paul workers are essentially the same as those being offered to Ford's 75,000 hourly wage employees throughout the nation, said Marci Evans, a spokeswoman for Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford....

NFL Notebook: Panthers DE fined for hit on Simms
Posted Saturday, September 30, 2006 2:45:54 PM by Blog57 Team
The NFL fined Carolina defensive end Al Wallace $7,500 Friday for his fourth-quarter hit on Tampa Bay quarterback Chris Simms. Simms underwent surgery to remove a ruptured spleen after the game last Sunday. It's unclear what hit caused the injury, but Simms had complained of soreness and shortness of breath before Wallace's hit, which was not penalized. Still, Wallace was fined for unnecessary roughness on the play. He hit Simms shortly after he threw a pass and landed on top of him. Wallace claimed he didn't know Simms had released the ball. The NFL said Wallace violated a rule that says players cannot ''unnecessarily or violently throw a [quarterback] down and land on top of him with all the defender's weight.'' Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden said he felt Wallace should have been called for roughing the passer....

SF Activist Wants To Make Electric Vehicles Everyone's New, Cool ...

EDITOR'S NOTE: As gas prices rise and sea levels inch upward, kicking the nation's oil habit is becoming a priority. Now one group of activists wildly passionate about their electric vehicles (EVs) is fighting to put a plug on American autos. Brian Shott, an editor at New America Media, interviews one such advocate, who says a tiny, ugly EV changed his outlook on energy use and personal transit. SAN FRANCISCO--It was his passion for automobiles more than a growing concern for the environment that first pushed activist Marc Geller to purchase the electric vehicle he says changed his life. In 1999, "I was looking for my next cool car," says Geller, a tall, wiry man who came to the Bay Area in 1976. Keeping up his old Citroen -- a funky French station wagon with hydraulic suspension that Geller says rode "like traveling in a living room" -- was simply too expensive....

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - Ford Motor Co., the nation's second largest automaker, said Tuesday its July U.S. sales fell on a drop in demand for its trucks as consumers shun gas guzzlers in a climate of high prices at the pump. Ford's July sales slid 34.2 percent to 241,339 vehicles, compared with 366,548 for the same month in 2005. The automaker blamed tough comparisons to July 2005, when its sales were boosted by offers of employee discounts on many of its vehicles, for the drop in sales. ....

Police think dog knocked pickup into gear, leading to accident

OGDEN, Utah The dog did it. That's what police in Ogden, Utah, are saying about how one of their pickup trucks got put in gear and ran over a woman. Authorities say Ranger, a German shepherd, was left in the truck while an officer went to check on a domestic disturbance call. The engine was running to give the dog air conditioning. But police believe Ranger hit the shift on the steering column. The truck rolled forward, running down Mary Stone as she went to her mailbox. It then plowed through Stone's yard, into a car in the driveway. Stone is hospitalized with a fractured pelvis and tailbone. Her husband says she had tire marks on her clothes. He's fuming that he's heard nothing from police -- not even an apology. Investigators are looking if the Ford had some sort of malfunction, since a driver is supposed to step on the brake to put it into drive....
