Katie Kennedy is still haunted by the memory of losing to Bettendorf in a regional final last year when Iowa City High was ranked No.1 in the state. For a while Wednesday afternoon, she had a feeling it might be happening again as Bettendorf gave the Little Hawks a tough match in the opening round of the Class 4A state volleyball tournament at the U.S. Cellular Center. City High, ranked No.1 again this year, beat Bettendorf in the first game, but the Bulldogs won the marathon second game, 31-29, and were within two points of winning Game 3 as well. That's when Kennedy had those nasty memories of last year flashing through her mind. "Yeah, I did," she admitted. "I was like, 'How will I feel if this happens again?' And I just would not let it happen again." City High won Game 3 by a whisker, 26-24, for a 2-1 lead, and then Kennedy made sure Bettendorf's bid for another huge upset would end right there....

Community members in Little Falls are on edge after two school-age boys were nearly abducted by a man in a pickup truck. The Sheriff's Department in Morrison County is trying to get the word out about the suspect, even releasing a sketch of what the man might look like. Authorities revealed to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that the suspect went to great lengths to try and lure the kids into his vehicle while they waited for their school bus. "We were told that these two young boys were approached by the suspect. They were enticed, but they didn't bite, smartly," said Morrison County Sheriff Michael Wetzel. The 12- and 9-year-old said that the man talked to them for a few minutes."They did a number of things right, first and foremost, they didn't get in the car," Wetzel said. "This guy told them that their dad told him to pick them up." Wetzel said the man tried to use a cell phone to lure the kids closer to the vehicle, but when their bus appeared, the boys took off....

A Beauregard man has died as a result of injuries he received in a two-car accident at the intersection of Lee roads 166 and 146 Saturday morning. Jason T. Stickland, 36, suffered severe head injuries after his 1995 Pontiac Grand Am was struck by a late-model Ford F250 pickup truck driven by Charles Brandon Thrash, 21, of Seale, according to a release from Lee County Coroner Bill Harris. It is believed that Strickland was entering the intersection when his vehicle was struck on the driver's side by Thrash, Harris said. TAMPA - The straightaways of the Howard Frankland Bridge seem to lull drivers into pressing hard on the gas pedal, Tampa police Lt. Sal Ruggiero said. During an hour of clocking speeders on the bridge Wednesday, police and Florida Highway Patrol troopers recorded seven eastbound drivers traveling more than 80 mph, at least 25 miles over the posted speed limit. "The very first one was 96 miles per hour," Ruggiero said. "They were cooking up there." Officers are ticketing speeders during a three-day operation between 8 and 11 a.m., Ruggiero said. Police also cruised the bridge in an unmarked Ford F250 pickup truck to spot aggressive drivers and tailgaters. An e-mail to the city's message center last month complaining about the fast-moving traffic inspired the crackdown, as did a similar operation over the July 4 holiday....

WESTMINSTER -- A display case in Fire Chief Brenton MacAloney's office showcases rows and rows of miniature fire trucks. And Wednesday, a brand-new, much bigger pickup truck sat in the station's garage. The truck, a 2007 Ford F250, replaces a 1986 military surplus vehicle, and will give firefighters a faster, more dependable way to do inspections and get to brush fires, MacAloney said. "It had major problems," he said of the old pickup. "We needed a reliable vehicle." Thanks to its four-door cab, the new truck has more room for personnel and equipment, MacAloney said, opening the door to highlight the extra space. The town paid about $30,000 for the vehicle. With lights, radios and painting, the cost will come to about $40,000, said Capt. Kevin Nivala. The truck supplements another pickup that is outfitted with equipment to put out brush fires....
