The family of a 5-year-old girl injured in a hit-and-run accident in September says she is on the road to recovery, but the investigation into the accident has so far yielded no arrests.Kentazia Carter of Troy was reportedly going to get ice cream at Ingram's Curb Market with a group of friends at around 9 p.m. on Sept. 3, when she was run over by a sport-utility vehicle while crossing the street. After Carter was struck, the vehicle that hit her sped away, leaving her lying in the road. She suffered a multitude of injuries in the accident, including a broken leg, a broken pelvis, a ruptured kidney and several broken bones in her back. But in the weeks since she was injured, Carter has reportedly made a remarkable recovery, and is already able to walk again, according to her great uncle, Reginald Canty.“She's back home and doing good ......

The new face of Lincoln

SOMEWHERE IN TENNESSEE -- It wasn't that long ago the definition of a luxury vehicle was simple and straightforward. Leather guts, power doo-hickeys, and swoopy dashboard script were all that was required to eclipse the Joneses in middle-suburbia. Throw in whitewalls, wire wheel covers and a Landau roof, and some neighbours may have thought you were hobnobbing with heads of state. For vehicles of North American origin, that meant Cadillacs, high-end Chryslers, and Lincoln. And it usually meant Grampa was visiting. These days, those former features of traditional luxury are available on Hondas and Hyundais. Heated seats, silky sound systems, and navigation systems are no longer upper-echelon; the masses are demanding them. Entry-luxury is a bit of a misnomer; to be cool, hip, and 45-ish in age and price, you're expected to be in a sport sedan that you would drive like a maniac....

Ford workers face life-changing decision of whether to stay or go

Like many of his co-workers at a Ford truck plant near Detroit, Edward Woods is facing the dilemma of his life. Does he take Ford up on one of its buyout offers and start a new career? Or does he stick with the job that's fed his family for the past decade and run the risk of being laid off later? It's a quandary that is playing out at 75,000 kitchen tables nationwide as all Ford Motor Co. hourly workers consider a list of eight buyout or early retirement offers made for the sole purpose of persuading them to leave the company. Ford is selling far fewer vehicles than it used to, and it doesn't need as many plants or workers as it had in the past. In a historic agreement with the United Auto Workers union, the company agreed last month to offer the buyouts to all of its production workers....

Heavyweights slug it out

The old Excursion, the largest SUV in the Ford fleet until it was discontinued last year, took a lot of hits for being too big to fit in most garages. So one of our first tasks when we test-drove a new 2007 Ford Expedition EL, the extended-length version of the face-lifted sport-ute, was to get it into our garage. It fit with about a foot to spare. And so did the redesigned 2007 Chevrolet Suburban we had in our driveway the same week in late September. Turns out the two vehicles are within an inch of each other in overall length. So the first exercise in our comparison test of the behemoth Detroit SUVs was a tie. But the rest of our evaluation wasn't as simple, especially when it came to such critical issues as powertrains and passenger amenities....

Time for a 'new City Council'

I have been living in Middletown for about eight years. Since I've been here, Mr. (David) Schiavone has been either mayor or on City Council. Mr. Schiavone, how many times do you need to be told to step down before you believe you are not the right person for the job? I have seen this city — my wife and her family have lived here for 40 years — turn from a great city to garbage. This has become a City Council of name-pointing and crying. ... I do not understand. We have no money but for some reason we can buy our police force new cruisers and SUVs every year. Not even cities like Cincinnati do that. I want to know how much money is being wasted on filling up the new SUVs our police force has. In my mind this city is not large enough to be using SUVs like a Ford Expedition....

Citigroup's Rubin leaves Ford's board

Citigroup Inc. senior executive Robert E. Rubin resigned from Ford Motor Co.'s board of directors Friday, citing potential conflicts of interest as the automaker reviews its long-term strategy, which could include selling off European luxury brands. Like General Motors Corp., Ford is struggling to revamp its operations as the 1990s boom in sales of sport utility vehicles comes to a close. Ford Chairman William Clay Ford Jr. has said he is open to forming alliances with other automakers. In his bid to turn around the company, Ford has said everything is on the table. In early August, Ford hired investment banker Kenneth Leet, an 18-year veteran of Goldman Sachs, to spearhead a review of long-term strategy for the automaker, including alliances with other automakers or asset sales....

Ford's Fuel Cost Tourniquet: Slash Pricing On 2007 Expedition SUV

Cutting prices on your newest SUV by an average of $4,300 is one way to make a "Bold Move," or a desperate one, really considering the current model just isn't selling. We guess that explains why Ford's dropped the base MSRP on all packages of its new big-ass SUV by a whopping $4,300. Although we've got to say, the exterior of this big SUV, inspired by the beast of burden looks of the Ford F-Series pickup, looks better than the '06 model no matter how pimp the package purchased. But with that big 5.4 liter 3-valve Triton V8 engine, you know it'll suck down gas like it's going out of style -- so guess where the "savings" will really be going -- and no, you're first guess shouldn't be your pocket. Re-familiarize yourself with Ford's newest Bold Move in the picture gallery below, and click the jump to get the full press release from FoMoCo....

And so, once more, we head down to the river

In two weeks and one day, my mother will drive me to Marmarth. We will have a meal at the Pastime restaurant. Then we'll drive to the bridge over the Little Missouri River. My dear friend Patti Perry, the former mayor of Marmarth, will drive over from her house three blocks away. There will be some hugs. Patti will call me a damn fool. Then I'll shoulder a 55-pound pack and walk north (downriver) a couple of miles and camp. From July 31 to Aug. 17, my plan is to walk the Little Missouri River from Marmarth to the north unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. I need hardly say this will be a solo journey.I'm writing this so I cannot weasel out of it at the last minute. The Little Missouri River starts at Oshoto, Wyo., near Devils Tower. It slides along the northwestern edge of the Black Hills....
