TRW Electronic Stability Systems Put the New Ford Edge at the Leading Edge of Active Safety

LIVONIA, Mich., Oct. 26, 2006 -- TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. , the global leader in active and passive safety systems, is supplying the new Ford Edge with advanced electronic braking systems including the integration of Ford's Roll Stability Control (RSC). The system is being supplied from TRW's Kelsey-Hayes Company subsidiary. Ford's RSC is based on electronic stability control, anti- lock braking and traction control systems and adds an additional gravitational sensor that directly measures when a vehicle is beginning to tip. The Ford-developed RSC system uses TRW's advanced high flow technology within the electro-hydraulic control unit (EHCU), thus helping to eliminate the need for a costly vehicle brake fluid pre-charge device....

Ademar Berrios wasn't having much luck hitching a ride to Bristol from St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury Saturday, so he found his own way to get there, police say - he stole an ambulance. Waterbury police reported the incident to Bristol police, who soon located the abandoned 2005 Ford Econoline ambulance on Queen Street in Bristol, and found Berrios on the grounds of nearby Bristol Hospital. ....

An elderly Drums woman was killed when the sport utility vehicle she was riding in collided with a full-sized van at Old Turnpike Road and West Butler Drive in Butler Township Monday afternoon, police said. Eva Tomkiewicz, 83, of Hemlock Street, was a passenger in a Ford Escape driven by her daughter, 50-year-old Jean Paisley of Hemlock Street, Drums, Butler Township police said.Two other Drums residents were injured in the accident, police said."We all just heard a boom," said a woman bystander as township police officers investigated the 1 p.m. crash that also involved a minivan.Tomkiewicz was pronounced dead at the scene by Luzerne County Deputy Coroner Brian Harman.Township Police Chief Charles Altmiller said the SUV was traveling north on Old Turnpike when it ran a stop sign and collided with a Ford Econoline van at the intersection with West Butler Drive....

HARRIMAN ? A man died Tuesday morning when his van ran off the road and struck an embankment, authorities said. Carl Maples, 63, of Speedwell was driving east on state Highway 61 about halfway between Harriman and Oliver Springs when he apparently lost control of his 1994 Ford Econoline van around 11:30 a.m., Trooper Gary Snow of the Tennessee Highway Patrol said. The van ran off the road into a ditch and struck an embankment, killing him. He was wearing a seatbelt. Authorities haven?t determined the cause of the accident. The Novi, Mich.-based auto parts supplier, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February 2005, also agreed to withdraw motions seeking court approval to void its collective bargaining agreements with the United Auto Workers and the United Steelworkers, the unions jointly announced Friday. The new agreements are subject to court approval. \"We\'ve worked together with Tower to solve difficult issues with a goal of preserving U.S. manufacturing jobs,\" UAW Vice President Bob King said. \"Our goal now is to help this company emerge from bankruptcy and return as a strong player in the U.S. auto industry.\" A telephone message seeking comment was left for a Tower spokesman. In Bluffton, Ohio, UAW members voted to accept wage reductions of approximately 4 percent, or about 75 cents per hour, according to a news release issued by the unions....

AOL said Thursday it expects to drop as many as 5,000 employees, or a quarter of its global work force, within six months as the company restructures its business to draw more online advertising dollars. The announcement came a day after the Time Warner Inc. unit said it no longer would charge high-speed Internet customers for e-mail and other services in hopes of preventing their defection to rivals such as Yahoo Inc., Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp., which long have offered free, ad-supported e-mail. An unknown number of European employees still will have jobs but with a different company as AOL LLC looks to shed its Internet access businesses in France, Germany and the United Kingdom. AOL currently has 3,000 access employees in Europe. But massive layoffs around the world are expected as AOL stops actively marketing its dial-up services in the United States and reduces its need for customer-support centers....

Ford recalls Louisville-made trucks, SUVs

Ford Motor Co. has expanded its 2005 recall of nearly 5 million pickups and sport utility vehicles to include 1.2 million more vehicles, including some that were manufactured at Louisville's two Ford plants. The reason for last year's recall involved the speed control deactivation switch, which could corrode and overheat, and possibly catch fire, according to a letter to vehicle owners from Ray Nevi, assistant director of Ford's automotive safety office. Vehicles from that recall included 1994-2002 Ford F-150s, 1997-2002 Ford Expeditions, 1998-2002 Lincoln Navigators and 1994-1996 Ford Broncos equipped with factory-installed speed control. Thursday's recall involves the same defect in speed control-equipped 1994-2002 F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks, 2000-02 Excursions, 1994-96 Econoline vans and 1996-2002 E-450 vans, and 1998 Explorers and Mountaineers....

Route 3 Accident Ejects Teen From Van

(CBS4) HANOVER A motor vehicle accident on Route 3 seriously injured one passenger and sent the driver and another passenger to the hospital with minor injuries on Sunday night, police said.The accident occurred around 7:40 p.m. on Route 3 just north of exit 13 in Hanover.According to police, an 18-year-old female passenger was ejected after the driver of a Ford Econoline van, an 18-year-old male, lost control of the van. According to police, the van rolled over and crashed into the median. The female passenger was airlifted to Boston Medical Center.The driver and another passenger, a 15-year-old female, were taken to South Shore Hospital with minor injuries.The cause of the accident is still under investigation and police did not know if the ejected female passenger was wearing a seatbelt....

Ford Motor Company Reports June 2006 U.S. Sales

* Ford's June U.S. sales totaled 269,404, down 7 percent. * Car sales totaled 107,608, up 7 percent. * Fusion, Milan and Zephyr pace Ford to higher car sales in 5 of the last 6 months. * Truck sales totaled 161,796, down 14 percent. * Land Rover sales were up 13 percent - 17 months in a row of higher sales. DEARBORN, Mich., July 3 -- Ford Motor Company's U.S. sales totaled 269,404, down 7 percent. Car sales were up 7 percent, but truck sales were down 14 percent. In the first six months of 2006, Ford's U.S. sales totaled 1.55 million, down 4 percent. Car sales were up 5 percent and truck sales were down 9 percent. "Our performance in the car market is cause for optimism," said Al Giombetti, president, Ford and Lincoln Mercury marketing and sales, "because it shows we can win in the industry's most competitive segment." Ford's domestic brands (Ford, Lincoln and Mercury) have achieved higher car sales in five of the last six months....
