Joann Dues, 55, waived her right to a preliminary hearing. She said she wanted to spare Lawe's family from hearing details of the deadly Sept. 29 accident on Highway 108 that killed him. At preliminary hearings, prosecutors present the evidence they have against a defendant, and a judge determines if a trial is warranted. After waiving her preliminary hearing, Judge Doug Boyack ordered Dues back to court on Nov. 13, when a trial is be scheduled. Deputy District Attorney Eric Hovatter said an offer has been made to Dues, through her attorney, for a mandatory four-year prison sentence in exchange for a guilty plea on the charges....

A red 2006 Honda Civic sedan rolled off the assembly line to mark the milestone. After building Accords for two years, the plant began producing Civics in 1988. The Honda Civic has been Canada's best-selling passenger car for the past nine consecutive years, and it remains the country's top-selling car through the first half of 2006. Honda's Alliston facilities have a production capacity of 390,000 vehicles per year almost ten times that of the original plant when it was building Accords. As well as supplying the Canadian market, it now exports finished vehicles to more than 10 countries, including the United States, Australia and Japan. A 15-year-old Cedar Street girl was taken to Venice Regional Medical Center Sunday night with a gunshot wound to her arm and chest. She was not seriously injured. The girl told Sarasota County Sheriff's Office deputies she and an 18-year-old friend had been walking on Yale Street in Englewood just after 8:30 p.m. Sunday when a car came by. It was a blue Ford Crown Victoria, she told officers. Suddenly, she told officers, she heard a "bang" and felt a pain in her biceps. The Crown Victoria continued south on Yale Street toward Old Englewood Road, she said. She told officers someone had shot her, but she did not have a description of anyone in the car....

| | | 'Wannabe' cop to get at least six years in prison | | Posted Thursday, August 03, 2006 2:46:48 PM by Blog57 Team | | At first, Tom Middleton figured the Crown Victoria zipping past him on Route 32 was a fellow county police officer who drove a similar car. But when he sped up to catch the white Ford, he saw the driver wasn't who he expected. The car suddenly slowed, pulled behind Detective Middleton's unmarked Jeep and turned on its police lights. But when Detective Middleton started to pull over, the driver turned off its lights and drove away. That seemed suspicious, so Detective Middleton turned his own lights on and pulled over the car. The driver, Karl G. Salenieks, was friendly, explaining he worked for Fallsway Security and was on his way home. He mentioned he knew some county officers. Detective Middleton could have issued traffic citations, but didn't have enough to arrest Salenieks that night, so he let him go.... | |
