| Lawyer shelves briefcase for car race | | Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 2:46:37 PM by Blog57 Team | | It's not that plaintiff's attorney Terry O'Reilly lives for putting the pedal to the metal on his two-ton 1949 Lincoln and cruising at 100 miles an hour. But it's one of his big thrills outside the courtroom. This weekend, he will fire up the vintage racing machine and drive it in Mexico's historic 2,000-mile Carrera Panamericana. O'Reilly's weeklong journey steering this heavy metal monster over thousands of miles of desert on a Mexican highway will be a break from his usual routine. Normally, he's a trial lawyer whose firm, O'Reilly & Danko, specializes in representing accident victims, such as the one against a Chinese candymaker whose sweets caused several children to choke to death, or the one against American Airlines after Flight 587 crashed in New York, killing 260 passengers.... | |

| | | Massa earns first pole; Ferrari locks front row | | Posted Monday, September 25, 2006 6:46:04 AM by Blog57 Team | | Two Ferraris will be on the front row for today's Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul, and this time the pole sitter will be Felipe Massa - not Michael Schumacher. Massa gained his first Formula One pole, surprising his teammate and seven-time world champion in qualifying Saturday. Massa finished in 1 minute, 26.907 seconds on the 3.32-mile circuit. It's the fourth time this season that Ferrari has qualified 1-2, but the first time the Brazilian has led Schumacher, who clocked 1:27.284 to start second over points leader and reigning F1 champion Fernando Alonso of Renault. IRL: Scott Dixon landed the pole for today's Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma with a speed of 107.484 mph, followed by rookie Marco Andretti at 107.417. Helio Castroneves was third in 107.236, just ahead of Tony Kanaan's 107.209.... | |

Journal of the Royal Society Interface www.pubs.royalsoc.ac.uk/interface Factors determining the potential for onward transmission of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease via surgical instruments by Tini Garske, Hester J. T. Ward, Paul Clarke, Robert G. Will and Azra C. Ghani (doi: 10.1098/rsif.2006.0142) While the number of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) cases continues to decline, concern has been raised that transmission could occur directly from one person to another through routes including the transfer of blood and shared use of surgical instruments. Here we present data on the surgical procedures undertaken on vCJD patients prior to onset of clinical symptoms, which supports the hypothesis that cases via this route are possible.... | |

| | | Al Pirro ticketed, charged with driving 98 mph on I-95 | | Posted Wednesday, August 02, 2006 8:58:31 PM by Blog57 Team | | Pirro, whose wife, Jeanine Pirro, is the Republican candidate for state attorney general, was charged with speeding 98 mph on Interstate 95 in New Rochelle this month, according to a copy of the ticket filed yesterday in City Court. Al Pirro, a lobbyist and business consultant, declined to comment when reached last night at his White Plains office. In an e-mail statement, he acknowledged getting the ticket and said, "I have entered a plea of not guilty and the matter will be adjudicated on the return date." A spokeswoman for Jeanine Pirro declined to discuss her husband's latest brush with the law. In 2000, Al Pirro's high-flying lifestyle helped send him to federal prison for 11 months after he was convicted of tax fraud for illegally deducting more than $1 million in lavish personal spending as business expenses.... | |

| | | Peugeot Bonds Tumble Along With Car Sales as Fiat's Punto Gains | | Posted Tuesday, August 01, 2006 6:46:00 AM by Blog57 Team | | July 28 (Bloomberg) -- PSA Peugeot-Citroen SA, the second- biggest carmaker in Europe, is losing out to rival Fiat SpA in the showroom and in the bond market. Peugeot's debt due in 2033 fell 9 percent this year, including interest, while securities sold by Fiat, Italy's largest carmaker, returned 5 percent. Bonds sold by European automakers have lost an average of 1 percent, indexes prepared by Merrill Lynch & Co. show. Paris-based Peugeot said this week first-half net income fell 60 percent. The company's market share in Europe declined to 13.3 percent in June from 13.8 percent a year earlier, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association. Peugeot's 207 model, a family hatchback introduced in April, is getting beaten by Fiat's Grande Punto, a compact unveiled last year.... | |

| | | Prac Three: Renault dominate in Montreal | | Posted Sunday, July 09, 2006 2:46:18 PM by Blog57 Team | | Renault fired out an ominous warning in final practice for the Canadian Grand Prix by taking a one-two when the pace hotted up in Montreal.World champion Fernando Alonso signalled his intention of taking a fourth consecutive win by setting the fastest time with a lap of one minute 15.455 seconds, easily the best of the weekend so far.Earlier this week Alonso claimed Ferrari were favourites in Canada but his performance today made light of that prediction and Renault team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella added further doubt to his claim.Fisichella, celebrating a renewed Renault deal for next year, was just 0.066secs slower than his team-mate, who leads the world championship by 23 points from Michael Schumacher. The Ferrari driver, who spun earlier in the session, delivered a late flying lap of his own but that was only good enough for sixth place.Home hero Jacques Villeneuve made a rare visit to the top three in third for BMW-Sauber, just ahead of team-mate Nick Heidfeld.Kimi Raikkonen, the winner in Montreal a year ago, was in fifth place, while team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya was seventh.Jenson Button offered little hope of an improvement in his fortunes in the aftermath of Geoff Willis' ousting as Honda's technical chief. The Englishman was 12th fastest, just over a second slower than Alonso's pace, although team-mate Rubens Barrichello was marginally better off in eighth.Scotsman David Coulthard also missed out on the top 10, piloting his Red Bull to 14th.Times01 F.... | |
