Spy Shots: Dodge Sprinter

Allpar.com has posted some great spy shots of the revised Dodge Sprinter. The Mercedes-built van has been a quiet success for DaimlerChrysler in the U.S., and DCX may be looking to expand its place in the market. The passenger version shown in these photos may indicate a new focus for the Sprinter van product, as well. With a little investment, the Sprinter could become an even better people moving tool for organizations like churches, schools, and maybe even some families, supplanting the age-old Ford E-Series Econoline and similar offerings from General Motors. The current generation van can be configured as a people mover, but the revisions to the rear window glass and some packaging changes could indicate that Dodge is ready to go after some of the full-size van market. The Sprinter offers better fuel economy, more space, and an overall better packaging proposition than most full-size vans....

UPI Thoroughbred Racing Roundup

CHICAGO, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Most of the heavy artillery was on the firing line at tracks around the country during the weekend in final preps for the Breeders' Cup World Championships, now less than a month away. And perhaps the biggest guns of all -- Bernardini and Lava Man -- both did what they needed to do in preparation for the marquee event of the Nov. 4 races at Churchill Downs -- the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic. Among the human competitors, trainer Todd Pletcher made the biggest bang. Four of his horses won graded stakes and another finished second, earning nearly $1.5 million in one day. Bernardini was the clear favorite in a four-horse field in Saturday's $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park and ran like it. The 3-year-old son of A.P....

Automakers looking for woman's design touch

DETROIT -- Katie Slater, a soft-spoken, ponytail-sporting 17-year-old, is attracted to fast cars and powerful engines. As a 14-second, 100-meter sprinter at Cabrini High School in Allen Park, Mich., Slater says she thinks cars should run and look as sleek and fast as her sprint. Chelsea Ramirez, 17, of Plantation, Fla., is more about luxury and less about practicality, even though her own wheels, a 2005 Honda Civic, are famously functional. Meet the car buyers and designers of the future. According to Ford Motor Co. research, women influence 85 percent of all car-buying decisions and purchase 45 percent of all vehicles, Ford spokeswoman Marisa Bradley said. Despite that, women are still the minority in the design workplace, something the industry is trying to change....

Take Me (and my gear) to the Starting Line!

Even the most organized adventure racer has oodles of gear to put in just the right place when packing for an adventure race. Outdoor Retailer Summer Market showcased improvements to several items adventure racers already use, and even introduced some items completely new to the scene that could forever alter the way you get to and from the race. If you've got the resources (about $60,000), consider the Sportsmobile conversion of that boxy new van you?ve seen around town. Some carry the Mercedes mark, others say Freightliner, still others say Dodge, but they?re all called Sprinters. Introduced in Europe by Mercedes in 1995, the platform has been commonplace throughout the world, but was only recently introduced to the U.S. market. Sportsmobile, famous for customizing vans from the Big Three automakers into off-road adventure machines, is now adapting what converts to the funky shape are calling "the van you can stand up in." Mountain bike champion Brian Lopes loves the van so much, he has one customized for his specific needs....

After the conversion: The search for vegetable-oil motor fuel
Posted Tuesday, August 01, 2006 4:45:59 PM by Blog57 Team
The quest for secondhand fryer oil to use as a motor fuel sometimes turns on the question of whom you know. But as some restaurant owners and managers have discovered, it is also a question of who you are and what you do for a living. Take David Selig, the 41-year-old owner of five restaurants in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Cooking flash-fried rice balls, lotus-root chips and vegetarian meatballs, his kitchens produce as much as 266 liters of waste oil each week -- sometimes more than twice the amount needed to run the Dodge Sprinter diesel van that Selig uses in his restaurant and catering businesses. Selig, who has a four-restaurant chain called Rice and a separate establishment featuring Basque cuisine called N (pronounced enya), had a modified Greasecar conversion kit installed in the van last month....

Bush: U.S. progress on better plug-in hybrids speeds along
Posted Monday, July 31, 2006 2:45:48 AM by Blog57 Team
WASHINGTON -- The United States is making good progress on plug-in hybrid battery technology that would allow drivers to travel 40 miles without using any gasoline, President Bush said Thursday. "We're working on battery technologies," Bush said in Washington at a speech to the National Association of Manufacturers. "They say we're pretty close to a breakthrough in a battery where you can drive the first 40 miles on a battery, and your car doesn't look like a golf cart." But don't get the checkbook out to buy that plug-in hybrid yet. The big unknowns are cost and battery life. Plug-in hybrids are gas-electric vehicles that recharge their batteries with an extension cord and a normal wall outlet when parked, and through a regenerative brake system while on the road....
