| | | Features Review: Ford Five Hundred GT-R | | Posted Thursday, August 24, 2006 4:45:59 AM by Blog57 Team | | The Frankenstein Ford Five Hundred sedan you see here has a monster 590-hp supercharged powerplant from the exotic Ford GT sitting back where the rear seat used to be. Here’s a startling tidbit: It was built by community-college students. Well, okay, they got some engineering help from Ford. The story begins about a mile from our Hogback Road headquarters in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at Washtenaw Community College (WCC). The two-year school has an auto-body repair department with an interesting four-class, 12-credit curriculum called "Custom Cars and Concepts" that teaches students how to build one-of-a-kind cars like this four-door Ford. The program was started by the head of the auto-body department, Gary Sobbry, in 2004. Sobbry is just 30, a fourth-generation auto-body repairman and car customizer who says his great-grandfather built custom cars for Al Capone.... | |

| | | It's the colour that makes the car | | Posted Tuesday, August 01, 2006 8:45:51 AM by Blog57 Team | | These days, vehicles come in every hue imaginable. Yet, depending on the make and model of a vehicle, some colours work brilliantly while others fail miserably -- to the point that a poor colour choice can actually affect resale value. (Think of that ghastly "salmon pink" shade found on some Fords and GMs in the '90s as well as the wretched "Barney purple" found on some Chrysler Intrepids.) Put another way, there is but one colour for a Ferrari and that colour is red. Similarly, only a twit would purchase a Chrysler 300C in a colour other than Funky Vanilla. There are even colours to embrace and avoid when it comes to the Pontiac Aztek, perhaps the auto world's ugliest duckling: In olive, the now-defunct Aztek resembles an armoured personnel carrier. When decked out in black on black, the Aztek doesn't look all that bad (the sheer blackness hides its ghastly angles).... | |

| | | Brampton tipped to build Dodge Challenger | | Posted Sunday, July 09, 2006 8:46:33 AM by Blog57 Team | | DaimlerChrysler AG will resurrect its Dodge Challenger muscle car, and the auto maker's Brampton, Ont., assembly plant is the leading contender to build the two-seater. The move -- expected to be announced today at a NASCAR race in Florida -- gives the Chrysler group a competitor in a segment that Ford Motor Co. has dominated in recent years with the Mustang and puts the third-largest U.S. auto maker a step ahead of General Motors Corp., which has not yet publicly announced its intention to bring the Chevrolet Camaro back to life. Chrysler is expected to build 30,000 Challengers a year in Brampton once full production is reached later in the decade, industry sources said yesterday. A concept version of the car was unveiled in Detroit in January, but it was overshadowed by Camaro, which was reintroduced at the same time.... | |

| | | Green light for new Dodge Challenger | | Posted Saturday, July 08, 2006 2:45:49 AM by Blog57 Team | | DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., July 2 (UPI) -- Chrysler has announced plans to revive the street-racing Dodge Challenger muscle car in 2008 after a 34-year hiatus. The two-door coupe is coming back to take advantage of a booming market for powerful new American cars, Chrysler Chief Executive Officer Tom LaSorda told a news conference before the Pepsi 400 NASCAR race Saturday. The new Challenger will have a modernized Hemi V-8 engine, teamed with a six-speed manual transmission. The Challenger will be able to go from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, the company says, and will have a top speed of 174 mph. Like the revived Dodge Charger, the Challenger will share its platform with the successful Chrysler 300 sedan. "This is a fabulous move," Rebecca Lindland, an analyst with Global Insight, told the Chicago Tribune.... | |
