The woman was crossing from the west side to the east side of Abel Street when she was struck by a Fremont man driving a 1996 Dodge Dakota pickup truck. She was not in a crosswalk, Borck said. She sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to San Jose Regional Medical Center. Ward was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter with intoxication and felony driving under the influence with injury, along with a misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana while driving. If convicted on all counts, she faced up to 10 years in prison, prosecutors said.
