| Book chronicles apple ambassador's quest for best cider | | Posted Wednesday, November 08, 2006 2:46:09 AM by Blog57 Team | | H ere's how much Jim Parker loves apples: He's been so wrapped up in talking about them that he's forgotten to eat his doughnuts. We're seated on the long bench opposite the counter at Yates Cider Mill in Rochester Hills. We've been sipping hot cider and discussing the glories of apples in general and Michigan apples in particular. I've been slowly savoring pieces of my hot, fresh cinnamon doughnuts, the classic cider mill kind that make you swoon when you eat them at the mill and make for serviceable coasters if you leave them on the counter for more than a day. He hasn't. But after an hour or so, he remembers them, and there's delight in his voice when he does. It's yet another discovery for the Apple-Pied Piper of Michigan agriculture.... | |

| | | Chrysler execs test drive old cars | | Posted Sunday, October 15, 2006 6:45:50 PM by Blog57 Team | | AUBURN HILLS, MICH. ? The top 250 executives at Chrysler are test driving 3-year-old vehicles to check reliability and the consumer experience at the request of Chrysler Group President and Chief Executive Tom LaSorda. The executives will turn in their 2006 and 2007 vehicles for two 10-day periods to test-drive a used fleet of Jeep Grand Cherokees, Chrysler Town & Country minivans, Dodge Caravan minivans, Chrysler Pacifica crossovers and Dodge Ram pickups, the Detroit Free Press reported Saturday. Having test drives for used vehicles was LaSorda's idea; he was seen recently driving an old Grand Cherokee, the newspaper said. "In our positions we're pretty fortunate that we typically get to drive new cars," said Steve Walukas, vice president of corporate quality. "I know in my own situation, my friends, neighbors and relatives say, 'You wouldn't know what it's like to drive a car with a lot of miles on it.' This is a true way to understand." The program for executives at DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group began in August and will run for two more months, Walukas said.... | |

| | | New laws for state vehicles sought | | Posted Friday, September 22, 2006 6:45:59 PM by Blog57 Team | | Lawmakers and taxpayer advocates on Thursday asked for limits on how statewide constitutional officers can use taxpayer-owned vehicles and gas cards issued to them. The calls for ground rules came after Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom's 2004 family trip to Minnesota driving a state vehicle and using a state gas card came to light. The law allows for personal use of the vehicle and gas card, but provides no guidance or controls. State Senate Democratic Leader John C. Land of Manning said he was appalled to learn about the trip to Minnesota. "I was also concerned to learn that there are little to no regulations regarding personal uses of state vehicles by constitutional officers." Land said he is drafting legislation with the intent of establishing uniform procedures for how state vehicles are used.... | |

| | | Kyle Petty offers tips about tires | | Posted Monday, July 31, 2006 8:45:51 AM by Blog57 Team | | What I want: Tires are the only things that protect me from the road, so getting a good-quality one that's right for my specific make and model is important. I must have: A tire that handles the weather and wears well. I look for a multipurpose tire. I want one that goes decent in slush and is really good in rain. One thing I hate: Don't fall for some profiled tire with tricked-out sidewalls or other gimmick. The savvy shopper knows: It's not about the best-looking tire, it's about getting the best-fitting tire. For a sports car, get one with a lot of lateral grip that performs well in the rain. And for a minivan, one that can handle towing and is more all-weather durable. My pick: A performance tire provides traction in wet and dry conditions.... | |

| | | 'No-cost' MPI deal nixed | | Posted Saturday, July 08, 2006 8:46:02 AM by Blog57 Team | | MPI wants immobilizers in all vehicles at a high risk of being stolen, but one Winnipeg resident says it's not worth it for her. Andrea Leger received a letter recently stating that MPI would pay for the instillation of an immobilizer, "without condition," in both of her high-risk vehicles: a 1995 Dodge Neon and a 1995 Dodge Caravan. The letter claimed installation would be at "no cost" to the owner. However, Leger's vehicles both have remote starters called Command Start, which complicates the installation of the immobilizers, meaning "no-cost" turns into an $80 hit for each vehicle. Leger says the cost is too much to sink into such old vehicles. 'PRESSURED' "We're kind of being pressured into something that isn't worth it," said Leger, a teacher with two kids.... | |

| | | Many swap minivans for cars, crossovers | | Posted Friday, July 07, 2006 2:46:26 AM by Blog57 Team | | DETROIT ? Sandi DiPaola, a stay-at-home mom from Almont, Mich., traded in her family's big conversion van for a Dodge Caravan minivan this past year. Her reasons for doing so were as straightforward as they always have been for those who buy minivans: DiPaola, 38, travels heavy. She needed space for her husband, twin 9-year-old sons, a 4-year-old daughter and a gaggle of friends and possessions. She also wanted something fuel-efficient. DiPaola considered a Chrysler Pacifica crossover for a moment, but ultimately decided on the minivan. "Nothing else really met our needs," she said. If there were more DiPaolas out there, Detroit automakers might not have so much to worry about in the profitable minivan segment, which has made up about 12 percent of all light-truck sales for the past few years.... | |
