Analysis: Why Chrysler's not as bad off as Ford or GM
Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 2:46:29 PM by Blog57 Team
At first glance, Chrysler Group looks like another Ford Motor Co. or General Motors Corp.: losses totaling $1.5 billion in the third quarter, inventories of light trucks and sport utilities languishing on Detroit airport lots, production cuts totaling 150,000 vehicles, and rumors German-based parent DaimlerChrysler wants to sell it. But analysts who follow the company dismiss the suggestion that Chrysler's as sick as the other two domestic automakers that make up the Big Three. Auburn Hills, Mich.-based Chrysler Group's passenger car lineup is strong -- eight of 10 new products that have hit the market only in the last six months, four of which get 30 miles per gallon or better; its products in the pipeline are even better; and DaimlerChrysler is still in the midst of making production and related adjustments to the 1998 merger that brought together Daimler-Benz and Chrysler Corp....

KANNAPOLIS ? A motorist was airlifted from the scene of an accident here Thursday afternoon after his car collided with a dump truck in a curve along a narrow, two-lane road. The accident happened about 4:30 p.m. on China Grove Road, about a half mile north of its intersection with Moose Road. The site is in southern Rowan County, less than a mile from the Cabarrus County line and close to a rock quarry operated by Martin Marietta. According to the N.C. Highway Patrol, Greg Solomon, 32, of Kannapolis, was traveling south on China Grove Road when his 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser collided with a 1997 Ford dump truck driven by Ricky Pinion, 34, of 223 E. Third St., Salisbury. Pinion's truck was traveling north, and the vehicles hit almost head-on. China Grove Road was closed until about 7:15 p.m....

Hardtop convertibles gain popularity

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Ford's 1957 Skyliner gets credit as the convertible with the first mass-produced retractable hardtop. Its operation was complicated, slow (maybe 45 seconds to more than a minute), and crowd-pleasing. It was sold for only three years. Now, a half-century later, hardtop convertibles have become a popular choice, thanks to improvements in electronics and manufacturing. Buyers who like the wind in their hair choose them for added security, ease of use, and all-weather functionality. And watching their steel roofs release, fold, and hide in a trunk still draws curious onlookers. Two new ones -- the Volvo C70 and the Pontiac G6 -- went on sale this year . One more, the Volkswagen Eos, was just officially released on Labor Day weekend....

Some folks worship at the altar of pure horsepower and handling, while others appreciate the aesthetics of beautiful styling and attention to detail. And to a lot of buyers, reliability and practicality are the features most valued when they make a vehicle purchase. Fortunately, there are as many cars as there are individual tastes.Chrysler's PT Cruiser, a smooth, affordable little wanna-be hot rod first introduced in 2000, has received some tweaking for 2006 - quite possibly anticipating some competition from General Motor's new HHR. Both were created by the same designer, Bryan Nesbitt, who departed Chrysler for GM a couple of years ago.Exterior changes are marginal - the grille no longer extends down past the bumper and is garnished by a larger winged badge and framed by scalloped headlights with round fog lights beneath....

Dodge Challenger Slides Into Hunter House: Oohs, Aahs And Heartburn

An industrious photog friend of ours happened to be sitting on Woodward Avenue across from Hunter House, the B.S.B.J.I.T. (Best Slider Burger Joint In Town) and happened upon the second of a two-day Chrysler Group journalistic extravaganza. The mighty German-American hybrid gave auto writers of all shapes, sizes and weights an opportunity to drive some Mopar concept metal including the exterior-is-already-done Dodge Challenger. The not-so-much pedestrian event was interrupted by the grumbling stomachs of Chysler engineers, thus necessitating the quick stop in downtown Birmingham. In addition, we've learned the following from the Chrysler engineers: #1 Test mules are currently being run around the DCX facilities #2 Completed vehicle will be very close to prototype aside from a few small details #3 They are trying to figure out a way to laser bond the C-pillar to the rear quarter panel for a smoother look The following is our bud Evan Kelly's snappy little snapshot gallery of lunchtime for the Chrysler Group team....

Pain at the pump is the No. 1 automotive story of the last decade, according to a list released today by SPEED in conjunction with the motor sports and automotive lifestyle network's 10th Anniversary. U.S. gas prices soaring above $3 a gallon, and the corresponding fallout -- an influx of "hybrid" vehicles, declining sales of monster-sized SUVs and a growing interest in fuel alternatives -- was the top response from a group of automotive journalists and SPEED on-air automotive personalities, when asked about the most memorable consumer automotive stories of the last 10 years. A look at the Top 10 stories (descriptions below): 1. Gasoline tops $3 a gallon 2. Fall of domestic dominance 3. Dale Earnhardt crash at Daytona 4....

Chrysler ponders PT Cruiser Version 2.0
Posted Thursday, July 06, 2006 2:45:48 PM by Blog57 Team
The PT Cruiser has been a huge hit for Chrysler. Now, the company wants to make sure it stays that way, even as the car enters its eighth year and Chrysler executives wrestle with the big question: What should an all-new PT Cruiser look like? The PT Cruiser doesn't sell at prices way over sticker like it did when it debuted in 2000, but it's still selling well - more than a million have been sold over the years. ....
