| UM Student Killed After Slamming Into Moving Train | | Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 10:46:18 AM by Blog57 Team | | The young man who died after his car slammed into a moving train early Thursday morning was a senior specializing in international studies at the University of Miami.Police are trying to figure out why the 22-year-old John Patrick Warnecke from Virginia slammed into a moving train while driving in Southwest Miami-Dade. This happened at the intersection of Bird Road and Southwest 72nd Avenue. The accident left the nine-car CSX freight train disabled on the track and caused nearly 400 gallons of fuel to spill onto the roadway, said Lt. Pat Santangelo, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman.Authorities said the driver was headed west on Bird Road about 3:15 a.m. when he sideswiped a black Chrysler Pacifica, which was stopped at the intersection waiting for the train to cross.The crossing gates were lowered and the lights were flashing, Santangelo said, but the driver of the minivan did not stop and after he clipped the Pacifica, he slammed into the trains engine, rupturing a 2,900 gallon diesel fuel tank.We do know that there are no skid marks approaching the train so we dont think the driver took any evasive action.... | |
