Vintage whine

AMESBURY -- The American auto industry's retro movement has created huge interest and media coverage -- perhaps more interest than sales -- but if you're a car lover, you still take a second look any time you spot a contemporary Beetle, Mini, T-bird, Mustang, PT Cruiser, or Chevrolet SSR on the highway. While it is nice to have one of those vehicles in your driveway, it's immeasurably more satisfying when you can park it alongside one of the originals, especially one that you spent thousands of hours restoring. That's what Ron St. Germain and his son, Ron Jr., did during the past four years in their driveway -- that's right, no garage, heated or otherwise. Bit by bit, they restored Delia, a 1950 Chevy 3100 panel truck. There's not a lot of motoring mystique about these vehicles....

On road to adventure in Hawaii

Test Drive Unlimited from Atari for Xbox 360, for players 10 and older, $39.99. Aloha from Oahu Island. I now "live" in Honolulu County and own a small virtual house near the beach with a spacious garage for my souped-up fleet of vehicles. All this "rotten luck" is thanks to a slick street-racing simulation that enables a player to drive on- and off-road over more than 1,000 miles of diverse, photo-realistic Hawaiian terrain, challenge fellow drivers, run a few errands and avoid trouble with the authorities. In Test Drive Unlimited, a player selects an avatar from a motley crew (which would fit in on any MTV reality show) waiting in line at an airport. He then takes a flight to the island, rents a car and visits a real estate agent to spend some of his bankroll on a hip pad....

GM Says To Dealers: No Gas For You!

Like the Soup Nazi, the General's laying down the law on dealerships in the latest missive from the bean-counting bureaucrats at the RenCen (Note -- in today's episode, the part of "bean-counting bureaucrat" will be played by GM Veep of Industry Dealer Affairs, William Powell), by making it clear they'll no longer reimburse dealers for a full of tank of gas upon delivery. Instead, the Detroit-based automaker will be handing the dealership $20 for cars and $30 for trucks -- which if we've calculated correctly, will mean the dealer will be able to pump just over six gallons into a car and ten gallons into a truck without dipping into their own pockets. Hmm...since the tank of a Chevy Aveo (pronounced with the em-pha-sis on whatever syll-a-ble feels right on to ya) holds 11 gallons and a Chevy Silverado holds 34 gallons -- that'll be a differential of five gallons and 24 gallons in a truck....

Adding Muscle to a Mainstay

When Tim Lupski heard Ford planned to build a 500-horsepower version of its Mustang, he put down $1,500 to reserve one -- and was willing to pay $12,000 above the $48,000 sticker price. That was a year ago. But as the delivery date approached, the Mustang Shelby GT500's price kept rising, says Mr. Lupski, a systems analyst for an electric utility. By early June, he adds, the dealer slapped a $25,000 premium onto the price, bringing the total tab to about $73,000. That is when he decided to take back his deposit and pass on the new vehicle. Fast, limited-production ... ....

General Motors Corp. posted its best sales month for the year in June, capping a sluggish spring dampened by rising interest rates and gas prices, the Detroit automaker said Monday. Sales, however, were down 25.9 percent from June 2005, when GM saw sales surge because of its Employee Discount for Everyone program. June 2005 was the automakers' best sales month in 19 years.
