Chevrolet officials: Move to Impala a 'marketing decision'
Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 10:46:44 AM by Blog57 Team
HAMPTON, Ga. - Chevrolet officials say their switch from the Monte Carlo to Impala beginning next season is strictly a marketing decision. In the 16 Nextel Cup races next season in which the car of tomorrow will be utilized, Chevy teams will field the Impala SS. They will use the Monte Carlo in all remaining races and in the Busch Series. The Impala is our passenger car flagship and the best-selling domestic car in America. We would like to align those strengths with our powerful accomplishments on the track, said Pat Suhy, General Motors program manager for NASCAR. Chevrolet introduced the Impala in late 1957 as a 1958 model, racing it first on the beach course in Daytona Beach, Fla. Bob Welborn won a qualifying race in an Impala for the 1959 Daytona 500. The Monte Carlo has been the car of choice for Chevrolet since 1995....

Chevrolet Monte Carlo - Setting Records from the Beginning

Since the Chevrolet Monte Carlo's first year of NASCAR competition in 1971, the car has been one of GM's biggest successes in racing and the ball started rolling with a win (and a record set) by Charlie Glotzbach - with help from Friday Hassler - at Bristol on July 11, 1971. Chevy experienced success in the 1960s with the Impala and Chevelle. Towards the end of the decade, other brands were giving the Bowtie a run for its money. After the new 1970 Monte Carlo made its street debut, it was soon deemed to be a good fit for stock car racing. With a long wheelbase and rearward engine placement that shifted mass towards the middle of the car, the big coupe was suited to the banked tracks and as it turned out, the Monte Carlo was indeed the car that boosted Chevy's NASCAR statistics....

Earnhardt, Gordon driven to succeed

Last season, when Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished 19th in the Nextel Cup points standings, his mouth often ran faster than his sluggish No. 8 Chevrolet. His Monte Carlo SS regularly drove like a Nova. He let his team know it, once announcing at Pocono Raceway over his radio -- a frequency monitored by fans and Dale Earnhardt Inc. employees at the No. 8's shop in Greater Charlotte, N.C. -- that his car was the biggest piece of you-know-what he had ever driven. ``Well, the three guys that helped put that thing on the base plate are like, `Dammit. That hurts,' " Earnhardt said yesterday during a media blitz involving the 10 drivers in the Chase for the Cup. ``I go in the shop the next day and I'm like, `Hey, what's going on with everybody?' They come up to me and they go, `Man, what you said was wrong....

Non-luxury car brands have significantly narrowed the gap in quality between themselves and luxury brands, cutting the disparity in half over the past four years, a new J.D. Power survey shows. The 2006 Vehicle Dependability Study, which surveyed the original owners of model year 2003 vehicles, showed that consumer problems with the new cars over the first three years of ownership dropped sharply for some brands, including a few not among the traditional high-end vehicles. Most notably, while Lexus won the top overall spot in the survey for the 12th year in a row, with 136 problems per 100 cars, three of the top five overall winners were not luxury brands. They included Mercury, in second place with 151 problems, followed closely by Buick, No. 3 with 153 problems....

A winning racing effort is usually the combination of several things, but the three most important are a solid dependable race car, driver skill, and car preparation. And lately these three items have worked in harmony for A.J. Lewis. Running in the Thunder Stock division at Ohsweken Speedway, the 21-year-old Lewis has amassed five feature wins so far this year, and these were all in a row. The Stoney Creek resident is presently leading the division points race at the third-mile dirt oval. "Everyone started to wonder if we were legal," said A.J.'s father, John Lewis, at the track recently, "but we were torn down and everything is legal." When a race car is "torn down," officials probe into the engine after taking off the cylinder heads to make sure all is within rule specifications....

The Chicago Wolves will sponsor Turtle Soup Racing stock car driver Stevie Campbell's racecar for the remainder of his racing season at the Illiana Motor Speedway in Schererville, Ind., each Saturday this summer. The Wolves logo is now plastered atop Campbell's 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Super Late Model, while the number 94 - which signifies the team's inception in 1994 - runs on its sides. Before entering the racing circuit, the South Holland native was a professional hockey linesman for 15 years, which includes officiating Wolves contests in both the International Hockey League and the American Hockey League. "This is the perfect deal for me because it combines the two sports that I am most passionate about," Campbell said. "To be able to put together racing and hockey is an unbelievable feeling for me....
