Racing: Chevy Picks Impala as NASCAR Model for 2007

HAMPTON, Ga. — Chevrolet announced Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway that it will market its Impala model through several races in the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup season. NASCAR will phase in its new-generation racing car, also known as the Car of Tomorrow, in 16 races next season, and Chevrolet teams will use bodies patterned after the Impala four-door sedan rather than the Monte Carlo two-door coupe. The Monte Carlo has a long history with the racing series. It first saw NASCAR action as a 1971 first-generation model and returned when Chevy resurrected the model in 1995. Monte Carlos will continue to be fielded in the final races for the traditional NASCAR racing car. What this means to you: The Impala gets the nod as the representative of NASCAR's controversial new Car of Tomorrow standard. ....

2 days, 2 metro banks robbed

A few hours after a suspect appeared in court for allegedly robbing a Jackson bank Tuesday and leading police on a chase up and down I-55, another Jackson bank was robbed at gunpoint. No one was injured and as of Wednesday evening, the suspects in the robbery - who got away with an undetermined amount of cash - had not been caught. In Wednesday's bank robbery, two men and possibly a woman entered the Amsouth Bank on North State Street about 3:55 p.m., said Jackson Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jeffery Scott. One of the robbers displayed a large-caliber handgun and another may have displayed a shotgun, he said. The green Chevrolet Blazer that authorities think was used as a getaway vehicle was recovered about an hour later at 414 Barksdale St., about three blocks from the bank....

Impala SS Lives Up To Its Muscle Car Roots

TThis is what they used to call a "sleeper."A virtual wolf in sheep's clothing, these are performance-minded machines that look like run-of-the-mill vehicles as they saunter up to a stoplight, attracting very little or no attention to themselves. In fact, few other drivers will take any note of their arrival. Everything changes, however, when that light turns green. Other drivers will hear the bodacious roar, look to the side where the car had been and see nothing but smoke, dust and the faint glow of taillights heading into the distance. Welcome to the world of the 2006 Chevrolet Impala SS, a sedan that speaks in a Barry White kind of deep tone and carries a very large stick. In fact, make that a true whoopin' stick. The model sent for review, draped in basic black inside and out, had very attractive five-spoke, 18-inch aluminum wheels, a rather subtle rear spoiler and enough SS badges to make any interested parties aware of its pedigree....

2006 Chevrolet Impala

Chevy's mainstream family sedan gets a major face-lift for 2006, as well as improved performance and quality. The chunky exterior sheet metal introduced in 1999 has been replaced with softer curves and smoother lines, and the result is pleasing to the eye while unmistakably Chevrolet. The suspension was left relatively untouched, but three new engines are now offered. Base models receive a 210-horsepower, 3.5 V6; midlevel cars get a 240-horse, 3.9 V6; and the top-tier Super Sport is stuffed with V8 power. Rather than pulling a V8 truck engine off the shelf, Chevrolet engineers developed a scaled-down version of the Corvette's all-aluminum LS2. Displacing 5.3 liters and producing 303 hp, the engine is equipped with Displacement on Demand (DoD) technology that lets it shut down four cylinders when full power isn't required....

A Sandborn man said his 2001 Chevrolet Impala was forced off the road on State Road 67 - just north of County Road 750S - early Wednesday morning by a silver-colored Nissan Centra that didn't stop.James H. Price, 40, said he was not hurt when his northbound vehicle veered off of the road to avoid a head-on collision with the southbound Nissan - that had two occupants - about 7:13 a.m. Once off the road, Price's car struck a telephone box attached to a fence post and a small tree, according to a report filed by Greene County Sheriff's Department Reserve Deputy Karen Oliphant.A witness told police that the Nissan passed Price's wrecked car and did not stop. The only license plate information the witness could provide to police was a prefix of 92B or 93B, according to Oliphant. ....

CSP 'angels' honored for help given families

When Suzanne Craig-McLeod is ready to look at pictures of the car wreck that claimed her daughter's life, she knows she'll be able to count on an "angel" to comfort her. On Tuesday, seven victim advocates for the Colorado State Patrol - called "angels" by those they help - were honored for their work in helping families cope with the loss of loved ones in car accidents. In Craig-McLeod's case, her daughter Caitlyn was one of three teenagers killed in a wreck on Feb. 28, 2003. Caitlyn, 15, was a passenger in a Chevrolet Impala that collided with a minivan. Craig-McLeod said she had just moved to Littleton when the accident happened and had few family members to comfort her. But Dolores Mitchell, director of the State Patrol Victim's Assistance Unit, was "at my home within the hour," Craig-McLeod said....

Sales on the decline, but Cobalt still No. 8
Posted Wednesday, July 05, 2006 8:45:51 AM by Blog57 Team
Chevrolet Cobalt sales slipped in June from June 2005 when numbers were skewed by unusually rich discounts, but the Lordstown-built premium small car still placed in the top 10 of the nations best selling vehicles. General Motors Corp. reported delivering 26,929 Cobalts to dealers in the month, 1.9 percent less than last year. That was still good enough for eighth place, behind only the Chevrolet Impala, which posted 30,716 deliveries. Compared to May sales, however, Cobalt sales climbed 21.9 percent. The Cobalt and Impala were the only among U.S.-made cars to break into the top 10. Toyotas midsize Camry was the top selling car, placing third with 41,427 sales, followed by the Toyota Corolla at 37,311 and Honda Accord at 32,587. The top three sellers were pickup trucks, led by Fords F-Series with 65,452, although sales suggest the traditional sales king is feeling some pain from high gasoline prices....

LORDSTOWN ? Filled with excitement, Gregory Jones buried his face in his hands as he stood on stage at General Motors' Lordstown Complex. Jones, 14, had just learned that his wish to take his family to Disney World had been granted, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, United Auto Workers Local 1112 and Lordstown GM. "I'm just so happy," Jones, of Youngstown, said at the complex's 40th anniversary celebration. "I've been wanting to go there ever since I can remember." Jones was diagnosed with cancer last October, but the disease is now in remission. His grandparents, Douglas and Caroline Richardson, couldn't be happier. "This is one of the happiest days of our lives," Caroline Richardson said. Jim Bumgardner, materials manager at the Lordstown plant, heads the complex's Make-A-Wish efforts....
