Fred Laredo pleaded no contest to intoxication manslaughter, a district attorney's news release said. His blood alcohol content was 0.24, the release said. On Feb. 16, Laredo was going 65 mph in the 24000 block of U.S. 281 south when he struck the rear of Vicki Alfaro's Chevrolet Cavalier. Alfaro and her husband were in a turn lane at a crossover. Both cars slid into the median and part of Laredo's Buick landed on top of the Cavalier. Alfaro was killed on impact and her husband, Virgilio, 68, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. By consensus, the Assembly Appropriations Committee on Thursday recommended that SB 1613, introduced by Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, be forwarded to the Assembly floor next week. The measure, which has failed in several previous attempts, would allow drivers to chat on their phones only while using a hands-free devices. Violators would be fined a minimum of $20 -- a small amount, Simitian acknowledges, saying his main concern is to save lives, not impose expensive fines. In approving the measure, the appropriations committee agreed to exempt tow-truck drivers who use two-way radios that also function as phones.... | |

A 37-year-old woman from Kelowna, B.C. is in serious but stable condition with upper body injuries after she was shot near the Boston Pizza parking lot. At approximately 8:30 p.m., a witness in Green Park Gables beside Westland Road heard a gunshot and contacted the RCMP. "The girl (victim) was screaming, 'Oh my God, Oh my God'," said Okotoks RCMP Cst. Keith Roblin. "We believe the gunshot was outside of Boston Pizza." The victim made her way to Boston Pizza, where customers rushed out and caught a glimpse of a man walking quickly south on Westland Road. Paramedics located the victim in the Boston Pizza washroom and she was then airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary.... | |

Helen Kenner was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center in critical condition. The motorcycle's driver, Kerry Kassel, 50, was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Around 4:00 a.m., Kenner and Kassel were idling on the motorcycle at a red light at the intersection of Walzem Road and Fourwinds Drive when a black Chevrolet pickup traveling westbound on Walzem Road failed to see them and struck the motorcycle from behind, the report said.
