Hundreds of entries from the world's largest auto show entered the competition in one of five categories, the winners of which were in the running for the top honor. In the end, the 2006 Gran Turismo "Best in Show" title was bestowed upon on Craig Morrison and his 1960 Chevrolet Corvette. So they waited until their children were grown, then purchased a 1958 Roman Red Vette for driving around town. Next up: a 1999 model for cross-country trips. Doug Flessing is president of the Lawrence Corvette Club, where he's in good company that shares a passion for the sporty car. “Many members have more than one Corvette," he says. “One member has five Vettes." Cars and camaraderie are what bring the club members together. The social group, founded by Dave and Marcie Engstrom in 2003, has grown to 55 members who meet the third Thursday of each month to talk cars. “The club is a way to make enduring friendships as well as helping each other with our cars," Flessing says. Benjamin Erik Case was taken into custody Tuesday in Laurens County after a police chase that ended in a gunfight. Case led officers on a 15-mile chase in a stole vehicle before his tires were flattened. Case then tried to steal another vehicle from a woman at gunpoint, but police blocked him in. Authorities say Case pointed a gun at officers who fired back. No one was injured in the gunfight. Several weapons were found in the stole car Case was driving, but it's unclear if all the missing guns have been recovered. Police say Case went into the Fast Cash Pawn Shop on Saturday, killing 53-year-old Tim Henson.... | |
