The Cobalt garnered 717 points in San Diego-based Strategic Vision Inc.s Total Value Index, the company said. The GM Lordstown Complex-built small car had 728 points in the 2005 survey, placing it ninth. The segment average was 749 points. The Cobalt placed sixth in Strategic Visions quality study announced last June. The cars predecessor, the Chevrolet Cavalier, placed 14th the year before. Coughlin lost to points leader Vinny Budano by two hundredths of a second in a make-up finale of the Ross Pistons Nationals from three weeks ago. The race was run during Saturday's qualifying action for this weekend's Nitto Tire Nationals. "It was a great race all the way down the track," Coughin said. "We were door handle to door handle until the finish line. He just got there first and my hat's off to that team. The track got hot today and it was tricky but we were both dealing with the same conditions. He won, plain and simple." An 18-year-old Yakima woman died Friday afternoon after pulling her car in front of a truck on South 48th Avenue, police said. The southbound Ford pickup hit the driver's side of the victim's Chevrolet Cavalier, causing injuries to all four of the car's occupants, according to a news release from the Yakima Police Department. About 2:30 p.m., the Cavalier's driver, intending to head north, entered the road from the 900 block of South 48th and crossed the truck's path, police said. The patients were transported to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, where the driver was declared dead. The other three ? described only as a 42-year-old woman, a 16-year-old girl and a 2-year-old child ? were being treated for various injuries, police said. The Florida Highway Patrol says the accident occurred at 9:30 a.m. in front of Mary Giella Elementary School on Shady Hills Rd. when a Chevrolet Cavalier crossed the center line and slammed into the bus, head-on. The driver of the Cavalier, a woman in her 20s, was airlifted to St. Josephs Hospital in Tampa., according to FHP troopers. Details about the extent of her injuries were not immediately available. The Cavalier sustained heavy damage in the crash. The only other occupant in the car was a dog, according to Troopers. A witness says the dog survived the violent impact. The Tribune Chronicle purchases one of the first Chevrolet Cobalts, assembled on the newest GM line. Thus, this era enters its latest phase. This weekend, when GM celebrates the factorys 40th birthday, it will display every Lordstown-built model from the 1966 Impala to the 2004 Cobalt and beyond. While the newspaper proudly participated in these significant historical milestones, everybody in Trumbull County should feel a sense of ownership of this plant and the cars showcased this weekend. After all, it is difficult to grow up in Trumbull County and not be related to or be friends with a GM worker.... | |
