Two MSU students will log a lot of hours in a Chevrolet Aveo this week, but they're not driving anywhere. They're hosting a costume contest, a visit from Sparty, a canned food drive and a date auction - without leaving the car. Keri Zolman and Arya Khatiwoda hope to become first-time car owners by spending the week in a Chevrolet Aveo compact car and drawing the most votes in an online contest. ....

Toyota Trounces U.S. Automakers in September Sales
Posted Wednesday, October 11, 2006 10:46:01 AM by Blog57 Team
DETROIT (AP) - Toyota Motor Corp. trounced the domestic automakers in the U.S. marketplace last month, posting a 25 percent year-over-year sales increase. General Motors Corp. and DaimlerChrysler AG each saw their sales slip by a few percentage points, while Ford Motor Co.'s sales gained 4.7 percent. GM's sales fell 3.1 percent last month, but the nation's largest automaker put a positive spin on the decline, attributing it to a reduction in low-margin sales to rental companies. The company's car sales fell 6.4 percent, while trucks, including pickups and sport utility vehicles, were down 0.7 percent. The numbers include the European Saab brand. DaimlerChrysler said its overall decrease of 2.3 percent stemmed mostly from its U.S. subsidiary, Chrysler Group, where sales fell 3.8 percent....

Missing woman's family raising cash

PARADISE -- The family and friends seeking Autumn Rose Tognoli, a 21-year-old developmentally disabled woman missing since Monday, are holding a car wash today to raise funds. The car wash will begin at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of Les Schwab Tire Center at 6308 Skyway. The family is seeking donations including office supplies, gas money and volunteers' time to help continue the search. The event will continue until there are no longer any cars to wash. There has been no sign of Tognoli or her 2005 white Chevrolet Aveo since she departed from her Sawmill Road home to go to the Chico Mall on Monday. The family is concerned, in part, because Tognoli has the mental and emotional development of a 14-year-old. She is trusting and outgoing although naive. The missing person bulletin describes Tognoli as being a white woman with red hair, blue eyes....

Only 2.5 years since it was introduced, Chevrolet introduces a redesigned Chevrolet Aveo sedan. The 2007 Aveo sedan boasts an all-new exterior and roomy interior design characterized by youthful refinement; a more confident, dynamic driving experience and generous features usually seen in more expensive cars. With its good looks, enjoyable driving experience and big car personality, Aveo plays a big role in Chevys passenger car family. In redesigning the sedan, the Aveo team reached beyond the important affordability factor to overachieve all-around, with great design, a smooth, safe driving experience and amenities that until now were rare in the segment....

Market for subcompacts grows in U.S.

But as gasoline prices settle in around $3 per gallon, the market for tiny cars is rapidly growing and changing as their styling, interiors and features continue to improve. \"I don\'t think there\'s a segment that\'s come to life quite so quickly and robustly,\" said Jim Sanfilippo, senior industry analyst for Bloomfield Hills-based Automotive Marketing Consultants Inc. Analysts say eight tiny cars are on the market from seven manufacturers, but that number is likely to grow as demand increases. Sales of the diminutive vehicles, called \"B-Cars\" in the industry, are up 43 percent in the first seven months of the year compared to the same period last year. So far this year, automakers have sold 151,848 of the cars, and analysts say sales easily will surpass the 175,387 sold in all of 2005....

Aveo appeals to first-time buyers as well as the budget conscious

As a car company steeped in big American-style sedans and pickups, Chevrolet has had a hit-and-miss experience with little cars, especially sub-compacts. You can go all the way back to the Corvair that was innovative but problem plagued. On the other hand, there was the more recent Chevette that was nearly indestructible with tens of thousands still on the road. More recently, Chevrolet and Pontiac tried various kinds of the Suzuki-built sub-compacts like the Metro, but it wasn't until about three years ago that Chevy re-thought its small car strategy that started with the replacement of the long-serving Cavalier with the Cobalt. Joining the Cobalt was the Aveo, a basic sub-compact sourced from Korean automaker, Daewoo that GM saved from bankruptcy. And to round things out in its entry-level lineup, Chevy now has the hot-selling HHR a kind of neo-retro mini-minivan in the spirit of the PT Cruiser....

Lexus hybrid cherishes performance

Luxury and frugality make a strange pair. One embraces excess, celebrates the unnecessary. The other clings to the practical, pays homage to conservation. It is difficult to think of them together, even when accepting the idea that opposites attract. But Lexus, the luxury car division of Toyota Motor Corp., has found a way to combine the two in an attractive package. Witness the 2007 Lexus GS 450h hybrid sports sedan. It is a "performance hybrid," a concept that boggles the mind and furrows the brow. As such, at least on the surface, it is a car seemingly at odds with itself -- dedicated to high speed and precise handling with one hand and to sipping fuel with the other. It is a pleasant example of a dual personality, a happy mixture of "better" and "best." "Better" is easy enough to discern....

Small cars, big sales

Popular for decades in Europe and Asia, where space is at a premium and gas is more expensive than in North America, the subcompact, or B-car, segment is coming on strong in the United States. In March, Toyota launched the Yaris and Honda began selling the Fit, a vehicle it likely will build at its newly announced plant in Greensburg, Ind. Nissan began selling its Versa subcompact last month. Starting in 2008, DaimlerChrysler will market its Smart brand in the United States. Smaller than even the subcompacts, the two-door, two-seat Smart can fit in the bed of an F-250. Those new models join General Motors' Chevrolet Aveo, a vehicle on the market for about two years; the Mini Cooper, on sale here since 2002, and Toyota's Scion xA and xB, which have been on the market since 2003....
