Update: Retro Southern 358 Will Roll Out in 2008
Posted Wednesday, October 11, 2006 2:45:47 AM by Blog57 Team
LIBERTY, S.C. — The good ol' boys at Southern Motor are ramping up plans to start making a limited-run vehicle inspired by the 1954 Chevrolet pickup. They are already "pre-selling" the first 100 production models of the truck, which will be available in the second half of 2008. The truck, called the Southern 358, is a two-seater that is powered by a 330-horsepower 4.6-liter Mustang V8 linked to a standard four-speed overdrive automatic transmission. A five-speed manual transmission is available as an option. The truck bears a striking resemblance to a classic Chevy, but the company says its product has a unique style that is intended to capture the look of the big-fender trucks of the 1950s. Other features of the Southern 358 include 17-inch chrome Cragar S/S wheels and power four-way-adjustable bucket seats....

Game on

MINNEAPOLIS - A 1979 Chevrolet van sits in the parking lot across the street from 34 Kirby Puckett Place on an August afternoon. Adorned in purple and gold from its roof to its rims, one glance at this rig and you realize the people who drove in it are serious Minnesota Vikings fans -- and, based on the supply of beers and brats on hand, serious partygoers. Nearby, fathers and daughters clad in Vikings jerseys -- with the names "Birk" and "Johnson" stitched across their backs -- walk hand-in-hand down Fourth Street, past parking attendants and scalpers on the corners hawking tickets. To some, a Vikings game is reason to celebrate. To others, it's good family entertainment. To others still, it's a job. A Vikings game can be all those things and more, and now attending a game at the Metrodome is easier than ever thanks to a light-rail transit system....

Man faces 5th DUI allegation

A Somerville man with four drunk en driving convictions dating to 1983 faces a fifth offense and a possible vehicular homicide charge after an accident early yesterday on Interstate 93 south in Wilmington in which one of his passengers was killed and another severely injured. Two other men whose car crashed into the wreck escaped with no injuries. Joseph S. Dixon, 46, of Somerville is accused of a litany of charges as he recovers from injuries suffered in the crash, which occurred five months after the Registry of Motor Vehicles refused to reinstate Dixon's license. It was suspended for four years because he was a habitual offender. Dixon was driving on that suspended license yesterday. Dixon's arraignment at Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington was postponed because of the extent of Dixon's injuries, which police said are not life-threatening....

GM bows out; Ford takes over value-price role
Posted Friday, August 18, 2006 12:45:49 PM by Blog57 Team
Value pricing lives on in the domestic auto industry for the 2007 model year, but the focus has shifted from General Motors to Ford Motor Co. The purpose of value pricing is to bring transaction prices closer to sticker prices and, consequently, reduce the huge rebates paid to customers. It is accomplished chiefly by cutting the sticker price. The transaction price is the figure actually paid (or financed) by the buyer. In the 2006 model year, Automotive News found that GM stickers went down an average of $1,293, or 4.6 percent. Ford's dipped an average of $546, or 1.9 percent. All figures in this report are sales-weighted. For the 2007 introduction, the shoe is on the other foot. Ford sticker prices have been slashed an average of $239, and GM's labels are up an average of $288....

DETROIT — Chevrolet will introduce the entry-level 2007 Aveo sedan, which is larger than its predecessor and aimed at a global audience, at the Los Angeles auto show in January. The sedan was redesigned at GM Daewoo Auto & Technology in South Korea and follows the unveiling of the hatchback version earlier this year in Shanghai. The new Aveo rides on a 97.6-inch wheelbase and is longer, wider, and taller than the previous model. It is powered by a 16-valve DOHC four-cylinder engine that makes an estimated 103 horsepower and 107 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard and a four-speed automatic is optional. Chevrolet says the 2007 Aveo gets an estimated 35 miles per gallon on the highway. The Aveo's "face" is characterized by V-shaped hood lines and a chrome-accented grille with the Chevy gold bow-tie emblem....

The Russian auto market: following the leader

MOSCOW. (RIA Novosti political commentator Alexander Yurov) - Russian dealers of major world car manufacturers recently told the world of their achievements. In the first half of 2006, they said, almost 400,000 foreign cars were sold in Russia. That compares with 575,000 vehicles sold in all of last year. If the current pace of sales keeps up until the end of the year, 2006 will set a new record. However, these achievements look somewhat lackluster when set against the sales of AvtoVAZ, the main producer of Russian cars. In 2005, it was able to sell more than 700,000 vehicles. Sales continued to grow in 2006 as well. In the first half they went up by 3%. Yet the figures for overseas companies cannot be overlooked. Some foreign producers increased their sales in the first six months of 2006 by 200% year on year....

Hamlin Handles Pocono Again

Denny Hamlin continued his dominance at the Pocono Raceway by capturing Sunday's Pennsylvania 500. The No.11 Joe Gibbs Racing Chevrolet driver, who also won the Pocono 500 in June, crossed the finish line 1.510 seconds ahead of Kurt Busch. The victory was Hamlin's second of the season and second of his Nextel Cup career and put the rookie into the "Chase" with just six weeks remaining. After winning his second pole of the season, also at Pocono in June, Hamlin led the 43-car field to the green flag for 200 laps on the 2.5-mile Pennsylvania tri-oval. ....

Birthday weekend also a homecoming at Lordstown GM plant
Posted Monday, July 03, 2006 12:45:55 PM by Blog57 Team
LORDSTOWN, Ohio - A General Motors plant in northeast Ohio marked its 40th anniversary this weekend with a car show of more than 600 vehicles, including many that were built at the factory. Cars from across the country converged on the site, including the first Chevrolet Vega - in baby blue - produced at the plant in 1970, on loan from a museum in Detroit. James Hallamek of Minnesota joined in the celebration Saturday by towing his 1973 Vega more than 800 miles to the factory where it was born. "She loves it," Hallamek said, referring to the car. "She likes being around her brothers and sisters." Tim and Sandy Wagner of Brook Park took their yellow, Lordstown-built 1971 Vega to the event. Tim Wagner said he wanted to show that the plant did a good job building the car....

Stewart Finds Home In Victory Lane At Daytona
Posted Sunday, July 02, 2006 10:46:23 AM by Blog57 Team
For the second consecutive year Tony Stewart captured the Pepsi 400 at the Daytona International Speedway. The No.20 Home Depot Chevrolet crossed the finish line just ahead of Kyle Busch. The victory was Stewart's second of the season and 26th of his Nextel Cup career. "I'm so proud of these guys, they're the ones that make this happen," said Stewart. "We needed this, we've had two really rough weeks so it's nice to finish this one off here." Road-course specialist Boris Said brought the field to the green flag for 160 scheduled laps of tight, side-by-side restrictor-plate racing. But by the time they reached the backstretch, Stewart edged ahead for the first time. Said, still in qualifying setup because he had to time his way into the race, quickly slipped back through the top-10....
