Red-hot Audi RS 4 offers everyday practicality

Oscar Wilde once said the only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. With that in mind, I slid behind the wheel of the red-hot Audi RS 4 for the first time this summer. I should have known that such fleeting pleasures only leave you wanting more, but when Audi Canada offered me a morning in this 420-hp bad boy, how could I say no? The RS 4, which I'd say is more at home on the autobahn than on our speed-limited highways, begged to be pushed hard. But a clean driving record still trumps a quick shot of adrenaline, so I resisted. Still, within the limits of the Highway Traffic Act, the three-hour tour was enough of a buzz that I had to book a full week at the wheel. So one phone call later, I was back in the saddle and looking to answer the question that had been dogging me since July: is the RS 4 just a toy, or can it be a comfortable, if not practical, daily driver? Let's begin with the exterior....

It's a time of extremes in the auto business. The 2007 model year brings capable, full-size pickups from Chevrolet, GMC and Toyota, even as Honda, Nissan, Chevy and Toyota introduce fuel-efficient small cars. Crossover sport utility vehicles – designed as gentler-riding, more fuel-efficient SUV-like vehicles – are growing in number with the debuts of crossover models from Ford, Lincoln, Jeep, Acura, Saturn and Mazda. But new, large SUVs from several manufacturers also make their appearance for 2007. Details of this wide-ranging, new-model year, from Acura to Volvo: Acura The RSX, the smallest car of this luxury brand, is gone for 2007, and along with it goes Acura's lowest starting price, less than $21,000....

Already a Facelift for BMW 3-Series?

As can be seen from these photos, BMW is apparently preparing an early facelift for the 3-series to meet the new Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class which are coming on the market in late 2007. On these pictures of an undisguised test car, one can see the new bumper and also the different shape of the BMW typical "kidneys" in the front grille. In the beginning the engineers from Bavaria had been driving up and down a mountain road with a disguise over the test car's front end, but decided to take it off for a short trip afterwards – which is when they got caught by the photographer. Looking closely, the disguise left some white glue marks on the the prototype where it was taped on. Source: Hans G. Lehmann ....

While Global Motorsports Group is known primarily for its well-honed Porsche tuning services and its Speed GT racing efforts, the company is no stranger to other German-bred machinery, including Volkswagen and Audi. GMG Vice President Fabryce Kutyba started tuning VAG-engineered cars long before co-founding the company with James Sofronas in 2001. I have always been an Audi nut. I learned how to drive in an 83 Ur Quattro, says Kutyba. My parents owned an 87 5000CS Turbo Quattro. For a large sedan, that car was an awesome performer. It was so ahead of its time. We clocked more than 300,000 miles on it. When asked about his thoughts on cars built in Ingolstadt vs. Stuttgart, Kutyba says, As opposed to Porsche, which I love and equally admire, Audi has always been viewed as an underdog, but thats starting to change....

The Audi A4 range last year took 42 per cent of all their UK sales; it is a very popular car with both premium fleet and retail customers. The A4 range consists of Saloons, Avant estates and Cabriolets and currently thanks to the hot British summer it is the Cabriolet models which are high on the must-have list. A4 Cabriolet sales last year in the UK were 6,051 vehicles, 17 per cent of total A4 registrations and the Cabriolet range was recently refreshed just in time for the great summer of 2006. We have seen a constant growth in coupe-cabriolet sales in the UK driven by increasing numbers of new models, the Astra TwinTop and the VW Eos most recently, with the Ford [compare Ford prices] Focus Coupe-Cabriolet due to join the fray in a few months time. Now these are what you might call affordable medium sized models....

BURLGARS forced their way into a house and stole car keys as the owners slept. The incident happened at a house on Brampton Road, Royston. The burglars entered through the front door then stole the owner's new blue Audi A4 from the driveway. Police are appealing for information about the incident which took place between midnight and 7.30am on Friday July 7. A police spokesman said: "Anyone in the area at the time, who saw something suspicious, no matter how trivial it may seem, should contact us." Police are recommending people take simple preventative measures and think about where they leave their keys, to minimise the chances of becoming a victim of this type of crime. A spokesman said: "Sometimes, thieves will simply reach through the letterbox with an implement and retrieve the keys....
