Lifestyle: Driving Ambition

The automobile is fast becoming much more than just a mode of transport for modern Chinese youth and the numbers are staggering. There was a 15% sales surge last year in the world's second largest motor vehicle market, with 5.9 million new cars sold to happy new drivers. The reasons for buying a car are personal rather than practical. "Getting a driving licence is a must for my generation, just like getting a computer," says Shen Xi, a student at the Communication University of China in Beijing. "It's a part of you, suggesting who you are and how you're doing in this ruthless modern society." The 19-year-old obtained his driving licence at 18, the legal driving age in China. "Nowadays, to a young urbanite, not knowing how to drive is like saying you don't know how to ride a bike. Most of my classmates have driving licences ready for a car soon after we graduate and land a job." The cost of a driving licence ranges from 3,000 to 5,000 yuan (USD375-625) and includes compulsory lessons at a certified driving school....

Abacab: Nissan Reveals Geniss, First in New Family of Global Cars
Posted Sunday, August 13, 2006 6:45:54 PM by Blog57 Team
At the 2006 Guangzhou motor show this morning (or is that yesterday afternoon?), Nissan unveiled the MPV-like Livina Geniss wagon that'll be the cornerstone of its China strategy (along with partner Dongfeng), and the patriarch of a new global family of cars. Named Jun Yi (meaning: boxy car that's one letter away from the wife of Woody Allen) in Chinese, the Livina will be the first Nissan to be sold in China, later this year, before a global launch in 2007. No word on a US version, though some say we could be looking at the new Chevy Vega. (And by "some" we mean, uh, no one.) Related: Ghosn Car Mad! Nissan Launches New Global Car Family [internal] ....

Jet fighter beats diesel Audi...

The actual Le Mans race winning Audi R10 TDI with Scotsman Allan McNish at the wheel went toe-to-toe with a Harrier jump-jet fighter yesterday. The contest, staged at the annual Family & Friends Day at the RAF base near Peterborough in front of a 5,000 crowd, ended in a close victory for the Harrier - by one-tenth of a second. advertisement The Audi, the first diesel-engined sportscar to win the famous Le Mans race, was quicker off the line - despite the R10 TDI being designed to start races from a "rolling" as opposed a "standing" start and faster to 150mph than the aircraft. But the Harrier, piloted by Flight Lieutenant Pete Keenlyside, the 2006 Harrier display pilot, ultimately just beat the Audi to the 1km by literally a "nose" before the jet took off in a spectacular vertical climb....

Raipur: The Delhi government today finalised Nawagarh area of Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh for setting up the Rs 10,000 crore power plant to meet the electricity requirement of the city for the Commonwealth Games to be held in the capital in 2010."The MoU with the Chhattisgarh government will be signed next month as we wanted the power plant to be completed by 2009 or latest by early 2010 to meet the power requirement at the time of Commonwealth Games 2010 to be held at Delhi," Power Minister of Delhi, Haroon Yusuf told reporters here. After visiting various places yesterday, Yusuf told a joint press conference with Indraprastha Power Generation Company, Delhi P K Chakraborty and Chhattisgarh State Electricity Board Chairman Rajib Ranjan, that they have finalised Nawagarh area of Janjgir-Champa district to set up the plant."We need 2,500 acre land in that area to set up the 2000 MW power plant with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore," he said, adding that 30 per cent of that investment will be borne by the Delhi government and the rest would be raised through equity. It had been estimated that by 2010 the power demand of Delhi would be 5000 mw and the Nawagarh power plant would meet that requirement, he said.To a question, he said because of the rich coal deposit, Delhi decided on Chhattisgarh and it would be even cheaper to transmit power from here to Delhi than to transport coal and set up a power plant in the national capital. He also expressed confidence that the Raman Singh government would extend all cooperation to the Delhi government for setting up the plant....

One of the newest fuels on the South African market will have a competition baptism of fire this weekend when Audi's R10 TDI blasts off at the start of the 74th Le Mans 24-Hour with a tankful of Shell's V-Power superclean diesel. Yes, diesel pretty much the same stuff that SA drivers have been putting in their tanks since the end of 2005 and the Audi will be aiming to repeat its win at Sebring in March, 2006. "Diesel is no longer slow and stinky and clean diesels mean diesel service intervals are now that same as those of petrol cars," said Audi SA's national sales manager Mark Handley whose company supplied eight Audi A8 three-litre V6 diesel sedans for Tuesday's media evaluation day on the roads of Gauteng and the tar of Kyalami racetrack ....
