Briefing newsmen yesterday at the Port, Comptroller of Customs in Onne, Mr. John Atte said due to the strict vigilance of his men and the implementation of the destination inspection programme of the Federal Government has reduced smuggling by 60 per cent. Authorities Thursday identified the two people who died Wednesday after the 1989 Acura Legend they were in skidded off the road and fell into a gully in Redwood Regional Park. According to the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau and the California Highway Patrol, the deceased are Barakah Nelson, a 26-year-old female, and Jacob Moreno, a 24-year-old male, both of Oakland. Nelson was driving the car when it crashed, said Sgt. R. Bowers, an official with the coroner's bureau. Autopsies were performed Thursday, Bowers said, but details were not available. The CHP, which is investigating the incident, released a statement Wednesday evening which said "for an unknown reason" the driver "failed to properly negotiate a left curve in the roadway" as the car traveled north on Redwood toward Skyline Boulevard.... | |

Lancaster Police say a 1992 Acura Legend stolen from the 800 block of Hershey Avenue contained a breathing machine that had just been delivered to Miguel Rodriguez, 58, who is being treated for terminal prostate cancer at Lancaster Regional Hospital. The car belongs to his daughter, Sonia Rodriguez. She said her father has suffered for several months and had recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea. Doctors say her father requires the device, known as a CPAP machine, to get desperately needed rest from cancer treatment. The case could go to a jury today. Rico Burnett, 30, of Hampton is charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer in the July 1, 2005, shooting of Trooper R.S. "Bobby" Bowers Jr. Burnett also faces charges of using and possessing a firearm, evading and eluding, hit and run, possession of marijuana and reckless driving. Burnett is accused shooting Bowers after the trooper tried to stop his speeding car on the parkway. Police said Burnett refused to stop then took off on foot after crashing an Acura Legend into a house on Big Bethel Road. The shooting happened about 2 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of Bell Street and Western Avenue. One man was left with a gunshot wound to his chest and was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. His condition was unavailable Thursday. According to police, at least four officers were at a nightclub conducting a premise check before closing. Police spokesman Sean Whitcomb said such checks are routine for officers, who want to show their presence just as patrons begin leaving the closing nightclubs. The officers were inside the club when they heard the gunshot. Five people were killed in the crash and two others are fighting for their lives. The accident happened around 2:30 Sunday afternoon between exits 5 and 6 at 177th Street on the Bronx River Parkway. Officials say the 1994 Acura Legend carrying seven people was driving southbound when it crossed the median into northbound traffic and hit three other vehicles. The five people who died were all in the Acura, several reportedly from the same family.
