In the next, he was plucking 8-year-old Chase Lynn LaBell from the fiery wreckage of a 1994 Acura Integra just before it exploded. Roehlk, 61, sprang into heroic action after hearing the horrific noise of the car slamming into a tree across the street from his home. He was able to pull Chase through the broken window of the front passenger-side door as flames reached up from under the car and lashed at the rear window. Each mill brings in about $62,000 in property taxes, Mayor Pro Tem Loretta Lipsey said. By law, the council may not increase the tentative millage rate but it may reduce it. A 3-mill increase would add $120 before any exemptions to Gray residents' tax bills on $100,000 worth of property. The city has not had a tax increase since 1999, when the rate was set at 8 mills. The rate was cut by a quarter-mill in 2003 and has been at 7.75 mills since. The council voted 3-0 for the increase in a called meeting Monday evening, only to learn later that it did not have a quorum because Lipsey participated in the vote while also presiding over the session in the absence of Mayor Jason Briley.... | |
